Dear Spotlight Readers

I am delighted to be writing to you as the new Consul General in Krakow. Allen Greenberg and his wife, Haruko, were true friends of Poland and deepened the already strong ties between the people of the United States and southern Poland. I’m honored to follow in Allen’s footsteps as Consul General.

For me, the privilege of representing the United States in Poland is both professional and personal, because my grandmother was born in Poland, near Lomza, around 1901. She emigrated to the United States with her parents when she was only four years old, but she remembered enough Polish to sing a Polish nursery rhyme to me when I was a child!

As a student of medieval literature I have a love of, and appreciation for, history and culture. There is much to celebrate in Poland’s history and in the more than 200 years of cooperation and exchange between our two countries. I look forward to traveling extensively throughout Krakow’s consular district and getting to know the people, culture, and customs of Poland and of my ancestors.

But I’m not only interested in exploring the past. I also studied computer science, and I have a deep interest in science and technology and their role as drivers of economic growth. I look forward to seeing first-hand the dynamic changes and innovation that are taking place across the country.

Most of all, I look forward to hearing your ideas about how to build the U.S.-Poland partnership for the 21st century.

“American Milosz” Exhibition at America @Your Library in Kielce

On September 17 at 13:00, Public Affairs Officer Brian George will open a photography exhibition, “American Milosz,” at the Regional Public Library in Kielce, part of our ongoing partnership through the America@Your Library Program. The exhibition provides audiences a glimpse into the American time of Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz. “American Milosz” includes photographs from the private archive of the poet’s brother, Andrzej Milosz, and Adam Lizakowski, a Polish poet living in Chicago. The photographs capture Milosz in many of his favorite places in the United States: from the University of California-Berkeley campus to the streets of American cities; from bookshops to his own garden and the hills of Grizzly Peak in California where he live for many years. During the event, the exhibition’s curator, Jacek Czarnik, will offer further insights into the life of this great Polish-American.
