Fall feels like it has arrived here with cooler mornings and shorter days. It was a terrific summer here in Poland. My staff and I had the chance to visit cities and towns across our consular region. Some of the visits we made include my trip to Karpacz in southwestern Poland, where I was privileged to see some fine Western horseback riding. I also heard from the mayor there about development plans for the region. It was my honor to attend a remembrance ceremony for the 2,000 Jews killed during WWII in Rymanow in southeastern Poland on August 13. My staff had the opportunity to visit farms in the Opole region to hear about agricultural methods. Ambassador Ashe also visited Wroclaw and Lower Silesia in August, meeting with mayors and regional officials. Several of us who work at the consulate also traveled back to the United States this summer to visit family and friends. I know the U.S. was also a popular destination for our Polish friends, and it is wonderful to hear about their experiences. New York and the national parks in the west seem to be at the top of everyone’s lists! Of course the big news here in Poland was the signing of an agreement on missile defense in Warsaw a few weeks ago. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in Warsaw and talked about the deepening of the security cooperation between our two countries. Americans know what outstanding partners Poles have been in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we look forward to our new defense cooperation. For details on the missile defense agreement, please visit our website. Our website also has two features I’d like to highlight. One is a special report on the crisis in Georgia and the U.S. response. You can find this at the top right hand corner of the web page. We also continue to feature a special section on the U.S. elections, now just two months away. For the latest on the party conventions and the final two months of the 2008 presidential race, please see the special “U.S. Elections” icon, also on the top right hand corner of the web site.
