Greetings from Krakow!

September 3 was an American holiday, Labor Day, which unofficially marks the end of summer in the United States.  Of course, in Poland, September 3 also was the first day of school, so fall seems to have arrived for Americans and Poles alike.

While many of us at the consulate traveled to the United States this summer to see family and friends, we did get the opportunity to see more of Poland.  In August my colleagues and I were in Tarnow and met with the mayor, Ryszard Ścigała, as well as local city and religious officials.  As always, after our visit I was impressed with the extraordinarily dynamic spirit of people in Poland!  Also in August, Consul for Political and Economic Affairs Duncan Walker attended the renovation of the Jewish Cemetery in Chrzanow.  Descendants of those buried in the cemetery were amongst those at the ceremony, which is just one of many ways that Poles are commemorating the Jewish history of this country.  Last week I went to Warsaw to see the Sikorsky Aircraft Company’s Blackhawk helicopter shortly after it arrived in Poland.  These impressive machines will soon be produced here in Mielec in the Podkarpackie region.

Looking ahead, the influential Krynica Economic Forum takes place September 5-8, and two renowned Americans will be among those making presentations.  Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried will speak on missile defense and security in the Southern Caucuses.  Former CEO of Discovery Communications Judith McHale will be giving a presentation entitled: “Women in Business: A Force for Innovation”.  We look forward to seeing these outstanding figures in Poland.

Speaking of influential women, I’m also pleased to announce that October 4 and 5, NASA astronaut Dr. Shannon Lucid will be visiting Wroclaw, Katowice and Krakow.  Our website will have more details on her visit in the coming weeks.

On the cultural side this month, the beautiful exhibit “American West” will be at the Pieninski National Park in Kroscienko through the end of September.  I hope you get a chance to see these landscape photographs of the western United States in this wonderful park setting.

Best wishes as we head into fall.
