Fifth Anniversary of September 11

The fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 is commemorated by many programs, exhibits and meetings all over the world.

We would like to recommend two exhibits related to the anniversary of September 11.

  • An exhibit of photos by Zofia Zalewska entitled "Nowy Jork 11 wrze¶nia 2001" at the Provincial Public Library, Rajska 1 in Krakow. It will open on September 11 at 3:00 pm and will be on display until September 25.

  • "Headlines of History", a poster exhibit that features the dramatic front pages of international newspapers reporting on the events of September 11, 2001. It will be on display at the American Corner, Dolnoslaska Public Library, Rynek 58, Wroc³aw. The posters include headlines, spectacular color photographs and detailed text in various languages.

    Workshops for Journalists

    On September 5-7, 2006 Ukrainian journalists were in £ód¼ to participate in a workshop as part of the international media training program "Partnership for Democracy", which is organized by the United States Consulate General in Krakow and co-sponsored by the Foundation Partnership for Democracy. The journalists took part in the annual Festival of the Four Cultures organized in £ód¼ and experienced firsthand how multiculturalism of £ód¼ influenced the development of its culture and art and also facilitated open dialog and tolerance.

    The next workshop for journalists will take place on September 24-28 in Brussels, during which the Ukrainian journalists will visit European Commission, Parliament and the main headquarters of NATO.

    Mars Photo Exhibit

    Mars: Mission Possible, a photo exhibit organized by the United States Consulate General in Krakow will be shown in Opole. It features photos sent to Earth by Mars rovers Pathfinder, Spirit and Opportunity as well as other images of the Red Planet.

    The exhibit also features a video made at Mars Exploration Rover Mission Headquarters during the landing of twin robot geologists Spirit and Opportunity.

    The exhibit will be on display September 15-30 at Politechnika Opolska £±cznik. ul. Miko³ajczyka 5, Opole. It will be a part of the Science Festival.

    Meetings on Transportation Issues

    The Embassy will be sponsoring the visit of Washington State Representative Edward B. Murray to Poland September 27 – October 6 to discuss the development of transportation infrastructure. Mr. Murray is the chair of the House Transportation Committee in Washington and has served as a member of the State House of Representatives since 1995. He has received numerous awards for his work on transportation issues including "Legislator of the Year" from the Association of General Contractors and "Elected Official of the Year" from the Maritime Industry. Mr. Murray will meet with a wide spectrum of Poles interested in transportation issues and deliver several public speeches while in Poland.

  • Five Years After 9/11: U.S. and International Strategic Responses to Terrorism.
    The response of the United States and the international community to the the continued threat of terrorism is the subject of a webchat. As recent events have shown, the world must remain vigilant in the face of terror. Join Bruce Hoffman, a leading authority on counterterrorism, for a discussion of the U.S. and international response to this threat. Bruce Hoffman is the director of the Washington, D.C. office of RAND Corporation, a nonprofit policy analysis think tank, where he also holds the RAND Corporate Chair in Counterterrorism and Counterinsurgency.

    This journal examines how the United States has rebounded and how the international community has rebuilt and come together to condemn terrorism in the five years since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Highlights include articles about the rebuilding of the area around the World Trade Center, U.S. government efforts to facilitate travel to the United States, an interfaith roundtable, planned 9/11 memorials, and how survivors are rebuilding their lives.
