Days of American Culture

Klub Niezależnych Stowarzyszeń Twórczych in Katowice and the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow announce the opening of a photo exhibit by Wiesław Pikul entitled "American West" at Marchołt Gallery, ul. Wrocławska 37 in Katowice from October 27 to November 17. The exhibit is open to the public from Monday until Thursday 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

High school and university students as well as the general public are invited to a series of lectures in English:

  • 03 November, 2006 at 12:00- "Political Parties and US Elections" Leon Lowder, consul, U.S. Consulate General in Krakow,

    Immigrants - Us and Them

    The U.S. Consulate invites the public to an annual conference organized within the framework of Bridges of Tolerance program on November 7-8 at Aula at Tischner European University, Westerplatte 11 in Krakow.

    Recent debates over immigration have occurred in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, France and other European countries. With Poland joining the EU, the influx of immigrants from the neighboring countries is likely to be higher, and economic and political issues surrounding immigration will soon be a topic of great significance.

    Both American and European immigration policies and experiences will be discussed at the conference. The U.S. Consulate has invited two experts, Peter Brookes, Senior Fellow, National Security Affairs from the Heritage Foundation and Emira Habiby Browne, Founder of the Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) to deliver lectures on "Immigration and National Security" and "Immigration and Integration" respectively.

    International Education Week

    International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract students from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

    American institutions interested in international education and exchange activities including schools, colleges and universities, embassies, international organizations join in a series of events, including workshops, seminars and meetings, to explain the benefits of international education and encourage young people to study abroad. The dates for this year's International Education Week are November 13-17.

    The Fulbright Commission in Warsaw together with the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow and the American Corner in Wrocław are preparing a series of workshops devoted to Education in the US. The American university professors and students, education specialists from Fulbright Commission, the representatives of the U.S. Mission to Poland and educational advisers will be talking about Polish - U.S. Academic Exchange Perspectives and E.U.-U.S. Transatlantic Collaboration in Academic and Professional Programs in Wrocław.

    There will be three other seminars for students (in Wrocław, Krakow, and Warsaw) explaining the admission procedures and possibilities of student financial support at the U.S. universities.

    Amy Tan - An American Writer in Krakow

    The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow invites you to Jaszczury Club, Rynek Gł. 8 to a public meeting with Amy Tan an American writer of Chinese origin and the author of "Saving Fish From Drowning", "The Bonesetter's Daughter", "Kitchen God's Wife" and "The Joy Luck Club". Amy Tan's favorite theme is the bond between mothers and daughters, and her books have been translated into 25 languages. The meeting, moderated by Bogdan Zalewski, RMF FM journalist will be held on November 14 at 18:00.

    Amy Tan will also meet with seminar students of the Jagiellonian University English Department as well as with some Krakow writers and publishers.

    Chamber Winds Concert

    The United States Air Forces in Europe Band, stationed at Sembach, Germany, is one of the oldest musical units in the Air Force and the only Air Force Band in Europe. Often referred as "America’s Musical Ambassadors", they have a performance tradition spanning 60 years. The 60 member unit is comprised of several performing ensembles. Each group travels extensively, presenting over 300 performances each year. Chamber Winds (one of performing ensembles) is coming to give a series of concerts in the region of South-Western Poland and will perform "light classical music" for the Polish audience. The program of their 5 concerts includes pieces by: Borodin, Strauss, Copland, Shaw, Rossini and Pacquito D’Rivera among others.

  • November 14 at 6:00 p.m., Krakow, Klub Garnizonowy, Zyblikiewicza St. 1 -concert organized with the 2nd Mechanized Corps in Krakow
  • November 15 at 6:00 p.m., Katowice, Dom Kultury Katowice "Szopienice - Giszowiec", Plac Pod Lipami 1 -concert organized with Miejski Dom Kultury Katowice "Szopienice – Giszowiec"
  • November 16 at 7:00 p.m., Świdnica, Sala Teatralna Świdnickiego Ośrodka Kultury, Rynek 43 -concert organized with Urząd Miasta Swidnica, Świdnicki Ośrodek Kultury, Remy Automotive Poland, "Arte"– Artur Janicki
  • November 17 at 2:00 p.m., Wrocław, -concert organized with Ślaski Okręg Wojskowy
  • November 18 at 7:00 p.m. concert at Kórnik Castle, Kórnik, concert organized with Antonina Kawecka Foundation.

  • Festival of Graphic Narration

    Second Festival of Graphic Narration "Alias" will take place in Wrocław on November 17, 2006. Part of the program takes place at the American Corner at the Dolnoslaska Public Library, Rynek 58 and includes three lectures:

  • "The Death and Re-Birth of Comic Books: An Examination of the Last 20 Years of Comic Books" by Christian Dumais,
  • "Graphic Novels: Something for Everyone" by Laura Kaspari Hohmann and
  • "From the First Sketch to Publication: How a Comic Book is Made" by Marek Rudowski. The last lecture is accompanied by an exhibition. The lectures will start at 5:00 p.m.

    Human Rights Festival

    The Helsinki Foundation Human Rights Film Festival has been organized in Warsaw since 2001 to raise public awareness to human rights issues in Poland. Since 2003 the festival has also traveled to other Polish cities. The Krakow edition of the festival this year is organized by the Jagiellonian University Center for Human Rights with the support of the Helsinki Foundation and U.S. Consulate General as well as a few other organizations. It is planned for November 16-20. The organizers will show 29 films in 4 thematic blocs: Africa, former Yugoslavia, Kurds and Panorama.

    Strengthening Cross-Border Cooperation with Ukraine

    Another monthly workshop for Ukrainian journalists will be organized in Podkarpackie region on November 22-24. The program proposed within the project "Partnership for Democracy - International Media Program" will focus on challenges for the customs officers at the Polish-Ukrainian border. Journalists and participants of the program will tour various border check points and discuss all issues pertaining to the border crimes and crime prevention with customs officers from Warsaw headquarters and regional representatives, Border Guards, Police Inspectors and Prosecutors.
