Greetings from Krakow!

May will be an exciting month for the Consulate in Krakow and for highlighting the close Polish-American friendship. President Obama will visit Poland at the end of the month. Before that though, we'll start the month with a ride on the San Francisco bus through Krakow in honor of the Krakow-San Francisco sister city relationship, celebrate Czeslaw Milosz, who lived for many years in America, welcome Ambassador Feinstein to Krakow to talk to university students, enjoy some great blues music and finish the month with a remarkable silent film from the 1920s produced by Merian Cooper, who played a key role in creating the famed Kosciuszko Squadron. Not too bad, if we do say so ourselves!

Sincerely,
Allen Greenberg

The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow and the ON OFF theatre invite for a two hour long bus drive: direction "Krakow-San Francisco." The happening is organized to highlight the Krakow-San Francisco Sister Cities Partnership. On Friday, May 6, 2011 at 12:00 a vintage bus inspired by 1950s transportation in San Francisco will embark on a dream-like journey to San Francisco. Videos, posters, and photos will take students, media and general public to see Polish parts of this American city, like Lech Walesa St., in San Francisco, as well as city landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Park, City Lights Bookstore, Lombard Street, Dolores Mission, Pacific Heights, Cable Car Museum, Little Italy and lots of others. The bus will also be a stage for famous Poles pursuing their careers in San Francisco and environs. The bus passengers will hear Helena Modjeska recitals in the California Theatre and later will complete their knowledge about the famous Polish-American actress with a short visit to the Krakow Theatre Museum one of the “stops” on the San Francisco Bus route. The Bus will also be the stage for a play based on Czeslaw Milosz’s “Visions from San Francisco Bay,” which provides an insight into his American experience, during his centennial year celebrations.

The 2nd Czes豉w Milosz International Literary Festival

The 2nd Czes豉w Milosz International Literary Festival that will be held on May 9-15, 2011 celebrates “The Mi這sz Year” on the occasion of his 100th birth anniversary. The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow is going to be involved in the events of the Milosz Festival to emphasize the role and a special place that the Polish-American writer holds in the modern world culture.

For many years the U.S. Consulate supported and co-organized poetry events such as Polish-American Poetry Seminars, which often featured Czeslaw Milosz reading his own poetry or poetry of American poets, his friends and guests of the Seminars. Those yearly events contributed significantly to building powerful bridges between intellectuals of both countries. The personal and institutional connection developed over the years since the poet settled down in Krakow prompted an active participation in such worthy events as the Milosz Festival. Among its various seminars, conferences and poetry readings there will be an event remembering also the American chapter of Milosz’s life. On Tuesday, May 10, 2011, in the Mi這sz Pavilion, the commemorative evening "My Mi這sz" will gather some of the closest friends and colleagues of the Nobel Prize Laureate who will share memories of their time spent with the poet, the yet untold stories and anecdotes.
