Message from Consul General Anne Hall Greetings from the US Consul General in Krakow! Spotlight has been a way for the US Consulate in Krakow to let you know about upcoming events, web chats, and other programs of general interest. I am often asked what we do at the Consulate. I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you a little about our work here in the past month. On April 16, Ambassador Ashe and I had the privilege to participate in the March of the Living at Auschwitz. The day was obviously very difficult, as any visit to Auschwitz is, but also uplifting in the sense that so many young people marched with survivors and rescuers. Seeing so many young people promoting tolerance and remembering this painful period in history makes me hopeful for the future. I also had the great privilege to host Cardinal Dziwisz and Ambassador Ashe in my home this month. April 22, as many of you know, was Earth Day, which first began in the United States in 1970. To honor Earth Day here in Krakow, we hosted a group of National Park Service leaders from parks, four of whom were in the United States last year on an International Visitor program. We heard about activities in the park, particularly in the expansion of volunteer programs, and future planned cooperation with US National Parks. Turning to business, I’ve had two opportunities in the past month to see the tremendous activity taking place in the Podkarpackie Region. On April 18 and 19, Ambassador Ashe and I had the opportunity to visit the Sikorsky and Goodyear Debica factories to learn about the successes in the aviation and tire industries in Podkarpackie. Those companies are investing in Poland’s future, and it was exciting to see. Over the weekend of April 28-29, I was with leaders from United Parcel Service (UPS) to learn about their charitable activities in both Poland and Ukraine. UPS, recognizing that community service is important in business, has helped to build computer labs and other facilities in schools in both Poland and Ukraine. Last year they even sponsored Ukrainian children and their families, thirty all together, on a visit to the United States! American business is also alive and well in Wroclaw, as that city continues to attract more and more international firms. I had a chance to hear about new investment when I spoke at an American Chamber of Commerce mixer on April 25. Finally, it has been wonderful to see the Work and Travel students begin to apply for their visas. This is a great way for post-secondary students to spend a summer working and visiting the US, so I’d encourage anyone who is interested to learn more about the program at www.travel.state.gov Let’s hope the beautiful spring weather continues through May! "Lifesaving Vaccines"
Vaccines prevent disease, prolong life, and eradicate scourges that have plagued people throughout prehistory. Knowledge of vaccine effectiveness is decades old, but children in developing nations are still dying from vaccine preventable diseases. The United States and international partners have been working together for more than 30 years to expand the benefits of vaccines to children everywhere. The story of their efforts is told in this edition of eJournalUSA.
