Greetings from Krakow!

February brought us some snow here in Krakow, adding to the beauty of the city.  Members of the U.S. delegation who were here in Krakow attending the NATO ministerial meeting February 19-20 all commented on the lovely atmosphere of the city.  Defense Secretary Robert Gates led the U.S. delegation, which was one of the first European visits by a senior Obama administration official.  During his visit, Secretary Gates and Polish Minister of Defense Bogdan Klich met at the Second Mechanized Corps.  The two signed a memorandum of understanding that formalizes Special Forces cooperation between the U.S. and Poland.  As Secretary Gates noted during the signing ceremony, this agreement was one aspect of the deepening defense cooperation between our two countries.

During the NATO meeting I had the opportunity to attend a dinner at the National Museum here in Krakow hosted by Prime Minister Tusk.  Our Polish hosts arranged a truly spectacular evening that showcased Polish history and culture.

We expect more visitors in March as the weather improves.  On March 13 I will be in Wroclaw to welcome a sister city delegation from Charlotte, North Carolina.  We will be holding a reception for the group at the American Corner in Wroclaw as part of our year-long celebration of the 90th Anniversary of Polish-American diplomatic relations.

Also in March I will host a farewell gathering for Israel's Ambassador to Poland, David Peleg, who will conclude five years in Poland.  He and his staff have worked closely with the Consulate for many years on Holocaust issues.

For schools and institutions, I’d like to highlight our embassy speaker’s program.  Your high school, college, university or institution can invite a U.S. diplomat to come speak on a variety of topics, including study in the U.S. and U.S.-Polish relations.  Our officers especially welcome the opportunity for discussion and exchange of ideas.  For more information on this program, please see the following link: http://poland.usembassy.gov/poland/speakers_bureau.html or e-mail Elzbieta Konarska at KonarskaEM@state.gov .

We often say that March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb---so far in Krakow, we’ve had some spring-like weather.  Let’s hope it continues!
