Issue: |
The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow is pleased to invite for "The Land Where Blues Began" a presentation on Alan Lomax's collection by Don Fleming and Michael Taft of the Library of Congress. Alan Lomax devoted himself to what he called "the deep river of song" - the African musical heritage in the Americas, which he recognized as a wellspring of creativity, innovation and cultural change in the United States. Between the 1930s and the '80s, Lomax traveled the American South and the Caribbean many times to chronicle Black American cultural life. By the time the project was over, fifty years of Black American music, stories and social commentary were a part of America's official archives. Today, those documents are a part of the Alan Lomax Archive of New York City and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington. The presentation and lecture illustrated by films and music will be held on March 11 (Friday) at 1:00 p.m. at the Academy of Music in Katowice, Sala Teatralna, ul.Krasinskiego 27.
