Greetings from Krakow! As the old Polish saying about the weather goes, “W marcu jak w garncu, in March, as in a pot,” our Consulate schedule has a varied and fun mix for March. Our calendar this month includes something for everyone with topics ranging from Native Americans to Route 66 to historic hockey wins. We’ll also take a look at more serious topics such as support for democracy in Eastern Europe. 50th Anniversary of Peace Corps of America March 1, 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 10924, formally establishing the Peace Corps. March 2011 has been designated Peace Corps Month. Other celebrations of the Peace Corps and its legacy will continue throughout 2011, with key dates including: June 30-July 4 and July 7-11 when the Peace Corps is featured at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C.; and the August/September commemorations of the departure of the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers to Ghana and Tanzania. Photo exhibition "USA in Your Lens" in Krakow and Wroclaw Please visit an exhibit featuring the 30 best photos sent to the contest "USA w Twoim Obiektywie" (USA in Your Lens). Poles who traveled to the United States submitted photos showing American life as they experienced it: busy city scenes, alongside landscapes and monuments.The exhibit is currently on display at the Regional Public Library, Rajska 1 in Krakow until the end of March and then it will travel to the City Public Library, ul. Szewska 78 in Wroclaw, where it will open on March 30th. |

Film "Miracle" at Wroclaw Polytechnic On March 3 the students of Wroclaw University and Polytechnic will have an opportunity to see the film "Miracle" which chronicles the historic U.S. hockey team's victory over the favored Soviet team. During 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid the United States men's hockey team, led by head coach Herb Brooks won the gold medal. The historic background of the famous match will be introduced by the Public Affairs Officer Benjamin Ousley. If you are interested, please come to Budynek A-1, sala 329 Wroclaw Polytechnic, ul. Poland and America Together for Democracy On Thursday March 3, 2011 at 10:00, Public Affairs Officer Benjamin Ousley will give a lecture on the joint American and Polish support for democracy to the East of Polish borders for a group of forty students from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Lithuania and Poland. The students are participants of a 10 day long “Winter School” organized by Jan Nowak Jezioranski College for Eastern Europe in Wroclaw. The eighth edition of Winter School in Wroclaw will be focused on transformation issues of various countries in the region, current developments, Polish and German Eastern policies, public diplomacy, Czeslaw Milosz “Native Realm” and several other topics dealt with by Polish and foreign experts and public figures including the Mayor of Wroclaw Rafal Dutkiewicz. The Winter School will be held on March 1-10, 2011 in the Ossolineum Conference Hall, in Nankiera 17. |

Education USA Seminar for Undergraduate Students at High School no 5 in Wroclaw On March 3, the U.S. Consulate will conduct a seminar on opportunities to study at U.S. universities for the students of High School no 5 in Wroclaw. The presentations will include information on U.S. higher education system, application procedures, funding opportunities and practical guidelines on testing, test preparation and personal statements. Contest on the United States in Wroclaw On March 4 Public Affairs Officer Benjamin Ousley will sit in the jury of a contest organized by FREYA, Wroclaw Foundation for European Education and International Cooperation and Wroclaw EMPIK. The main topic of the event for junior high school students will be the culture and civilization of the United States. This will be the first in the series of contests "Coolturalnie przez świat." The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow is honorary patron of this event. |

Alaska in the Lens of a Polish Naturalist –Exhibition at the Rzeszow University Library Rzeszow University students and the general public are invited to an afternoon with Alaska which will consist of a photo exhibition “Alaska – the Beauty of Wilderness ” presented together with a lecture by Sebastian Bielak, Polish naturalist and academic from Krakow Technology University. Dr. Bielak spent several months in Alaska doing research at national parks and natural reserves. His presentation will be accompanied by a documentary film “Alone in the Wilderness” about a man who left a city with its comfort to live for the next 30 years in the wilderness of Alaska. The exhibition will be opened on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 14:00 in the Rzeszow University Library, Cegielniana 12. |

Seminar on Historic Route 66 University of Bielsko-Biała Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of English, American Club and United States Consulate General invite you to revisit the iconic Route 66 during a Seminar "Historic Route 66: 2000 miles or more of American Myth exemplified in Literature, Film, Music and Art." The seminar will take place on March 17-18, 2011 at Akademia Techniczo-Humanistyczna (University of Bielsko-Biała) in Bielsko-Biała, Willowa Street 2. Annual American Day in Ruda Slaska dedicated to “Native Americans” The U.S. Consulate General together with Herbert Hoover Complex of Schools in Ruda Slaska invite the public to events celebrating the Annual American day in that city. This year the students of the school, teachers and the general public will hear stories and see presentations exploring the life, art and the heritage of Native Americans. Public Affairs Officer Benjamin Ousley will give a presentation on Native American culture and together with Jozef Sarek, Director of the Herbert Hoover Complex of Schools will hand awards to students, winners of several contests on American topics. The American Day events will start at 11:00 on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 in the City Cultural Center, Niedurnego 69 at Ruda Slaska. |

Zoom in on America Challenge We invite teams of students from high schools in the Wrocław region to test their knowledge of the United States during the fourth “Zoom in on America Challenge” trivia contest on March 30 at 11:00 a.m at the American Corner in Wroclaw, Rynek 58 . The contest will focus on the "Zoom in on America" publication for learners of English. Each participating school should send a team of three contestants to compete in a multi-media test of their knowledge of U.S. history, geography, culture, and politics.
