Eye on Krakow Exhibit

From March 10 to April 9, 2006 a photography exhibit Eye on Krakow will be shown at the History of Photography Museum in Krakow (Józefitów 18). The opening hours are: Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00 The photos are the work of young participants from the Krakow-based "U Siemachy" Youth Center and secondary school students from Houston, Texas. A group of 20 boys and girls from "U Siemachy" Youth Center participated in photography classes conducted by photographer Chris Schwarz, founder of the Jewish Galicia Museum, from September to December 2005. The Exhibit features the best work of the participants.

Eye on Krakow is modelled on the Eye on Third Ward, a program at Jack Yates Senior High School in Houston, Texas. That project has been running successfully for ten years and was initiated by a photography teacher there, Ray D. Carrington. Pupils who participate in the project first learn about techniques of professional photography while taking active interest in the life and matters of Third Ward, the district where their school is located. Later, they take photos themselves and provide explanation for their choices. The best photos are exhibited by the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

Publications: Working for Women Worldwide

Excerpt from Preface:
"Achieving global respect for women is a U.S. foreign policy imperative. President Bush emphasized in his first State of the Union Address, and on numerous occasions since, that "respect for women" is one of the "non-negotiable demands of human dignity."

In the international arena, the United States has aided efforts that have garnered substantial progress for women around the world. Some of this progress is historic. In Afghanistan, for example, millions of Afghan women cast their ballots in their country's first-ever free presidential election in October 2004. The United States provided political and advocacy training for Afghan women and funds to support voter registration and the election process. One Afghan widow casting her ballot said: "When you see women here lined up to vote, this is something profound. I have never dreamed that this day would come."

Publications: Women of Influence

"Women are the real architects of society." - Harriet Beecher Stowe

(From Introduction:)
"To commemorate International Women's Day, March 8, and National Women's History Month, we have created an electronic publication that highlights the achievements of some notable women in American history - from the Native-American Sacagawea, who guided white settlers through a vast wilderness, to Sojourner Truth, who fought for the end of slavery and equal rights for all, to Jeannette Rankin, who spoke for the health of women and children in Congress - believed that they had a contribution to make and did not shrink from any obstacles in their way. This account of their accomplishments is a reminder that all societies benefit from the talents and expertise of their women."
