Greetings
from the U.S. Consulate in Krakow!
May is a beautiful month here, and many visitors from the United States have had a chance to see Krakow at its best. We were delighted to host Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Maura Harty at the beginning of May. Ambassador Harty heads consular operations for the Department of State, and she had a chance to see our visa and American Citizen Service sections in action. The mayors of Meridian, Mississippi and Stamford, Connecticut from the US Conference of Mayors also visited Krakow. Former Washington DC police chief Chuck Ramsey and Chuck Wexler, Director of the Executive Police Research Forum were in Krakow and Rzeszow for a series of events with law enforcement and city officials. Finally, at the end of the month, David McCraw, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the New York Times, was in Krakow to speak about libel laws and media access to government in a post 9-11 environment. Ambassador Ashe and I visited Katowice earlier this month to participate in a conference on international investment organized by the American Chamber of Commerce. Certainly Katowice is doing a tremendous job in attracting new foreign firms to the region.
This has been a busy month for conferences
- the US Consulate supported two academic conferences held here in Krakow: The Legacy of the Holocaust Conference, organized by Jagiellonian University, the University of Northern Iowa and Texas A&M University, and a conference on US Foreign Policy organized by Jagiellonian University’s Institute of American Studies and the Polish Diaspora. It was wonderful to meet so many scholars and discuss the important issues relating to these conferences.
On the cultural side, we were very pleased that so many outstanding American artists were in the area this month. The US Consulate hosted Steve Berry, popular American author of thrillers such as The Templar Legacy. The Cultural Center in Katowice played host to pianist David Northington and a musical trio from the University of Connecticut. We also helped to sponsor two photographic exhibitions still on display. An exhibition of Man Ray’s photographs and visual work is currently open at the History of Photography Museum in Krakow. An exhibition of portraits of American writers by photographer Nancy Crampton can be seen at the Institute of American Studies on Krakow’s Rynek
Glowny 34. At the end of the month, I was delighted to be at the Pszczyna Castle Museum as honorary patron of a concert by the Akademos Quartet held to raise funds for a new grand piano for the Museum.
We have many exciting events coming up in June—please see our Spotlight for a list of these events and check our website!
