Cultural Objects and the Internet 11th International Conference of the Institute of Information and Library Science of the Jagiellonian University will be organized June 6-7th, 2005 in Krakow. The topic of the conference is "Information on Cultural Objects and the Internet." Participants will discuss digital repositories, archives, and libraries. As one of the sessions, the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow is organizing a videoconference with Carl Fleischhauer of the National Digital Library Program at the Library of Congress on the American Memory Collection. Transatlantic Relations Discussed in Krakow The Institute of Strategic Studies in Krakow is organizing a seminar on transatlantic relations on June 17, 2005. The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow is sponsoring the participation of Ronald Steel, Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern California, currently a Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, Germany. The program includes a videoconference with Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the European Union Kyle Scott organized by the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow. "American Friendship: Herbert Hoover and Poland" Exhibit in Krakow An exhibit entitled “American Friendship: Herbert Hoover and Poland” will open in Krakow on the 4th of July. The exhibit has already been presented in Warsaw, Lodz, Poznan, and Wroclaw. The exhibit was curated by Hoover scholar Zbigniew Stanczyk who mined the holdings of the archives of the Hoover Institution in Stanford, California, and the collections of the Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa. The exhibit highlights the friendship between Poland and the United States, which was epitomized by the aid provided by Herbert Hoover to Poland after both World Wars. The exhibit will be presented from July 4 until August 31 at the Jagiellonian University Museum at Collegium Maius, ul. Jagiellonska 15, Krakow. |

Jazz in July From July 3-9, 2005, the 15th Annual International Association of Schools of Jazz Meeting will take place in Krakow. The meeting will be hosted by the Krakow School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. During the Meeting Week there will be combos, master classes, lectures, discussions, as well as jam sessions at jazz clubs in the center of Kraków. The final concert will be held at Radio Kraków. The famous Polish jazz musician and guitar player Jaroslaw Smietana will hold the position of the Artist in Residence. The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow is co-sponsoring the participation in the Meeting of David Liebman,one of the leading American jazz saxophonists and composers of his generation, a renowned educator and author of numerous books, articles and papers on jazz and education. American Firm UPS Connects Poland and Ukraine From May 20-23, 2005, the U.S. Consul General Kenneth Fairfax and his wife joined a group of more than 50 senior executives from the American firm UPS for community service projects in eastern Podkarpackie and western Ukraine during which they built a new computer laboratory for the school in Lipa, Podkarpackie. U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe joined the group for the dedication of the computer laboratory in Lipa. The project was organized and financed by the American firm UPS and included participation by many of the firm's top executives. More information at: http://krakow.usconsulate.gov |

Going the Distance: The U.S. Tsunami Relief Effort 2005 In addition to a pledge of $350 million in relief assistance from the U.S. government, U.S. citizens in all walks of life donated their own money to relief efforts. In the affected areas, the U.S. military and the U.S. Agency for International Development began work on the ground. This electronic publication tells that story.
