Let's Meet at the Corner ... That Is the American Corner!

On June 7 at 12:00 a new American Corner opens in Wroc³aw at the Provincial and City Public Library, Rynek G³ówny 58. Please visit it and enjoy meeting America through books, magazines, DVDs and exhibits. There will be two exhibits on display "American West" featuring the beauty of American nature and "Ah! America", which compares landmarks photographed in 1920s and 30s with their present appearance

What is an American Corner?

American Corners are partnerships between the Public Affairs sections of U.S. Embassies and host institutions. There are over 300 American Corners all over the world. They provide access to current and reliable information about the U.S. via book collections, the Internet, and through a variety of events such as public readings, films, speaker programs, workshops, meetings and exhibits. An American Corner serves as an information outpost similar to a public library reference service. The multi-media, book and periodical collections are open and accessible. Associated reading or meeting rooms are made available to host program events and activities. In Poland there are two American Corners located in £ód¼ and Wroc³aw.

Polish-American Poetry Events

The U.S. Mission to Poland sponsors an evening of Polish-American poetry at the Rzeszów Museum (ul. 3 Maja) on June 22 at 19:00. The poets Philip Levine and Adam Zagajewski will recite and talk about their work. Both poets will then participate in the Kraków Poetry Seminar, which will comprise lectures, panel discussions and poetry readings and run from June 23 to 30.

An American poet Philip Levine was born in Detroit, Michigan and a lot of his poems depict the urban landscape of this city. Spain, where he lived for some time, has been another source of inspiration. Philip Levine is now Professor of English at California State University in Fresno, California. He is praised for the lyricism of his poetry, his identification with ethnic and working-class issues as well as a fascination with the natural world. He is also preoccupied with the spiritual sphere in a quest to explore his Jewish roots. The collections of his poems that have gained most recognition include: "On the Edge", "Not This Pig", "1933", "The Names of the Lost", "They Feed They Lion", "Ashes". The poet has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

A Polish poet, essayist and writer Adam Zagajewski was born in Lviv, but has never lived there. Shortly after he was born, his parents moved to Gliwice. The years of his studies in Kraków befell at the time of 1968 students' unrest. His poetry was already known then and earned him a position of one of the leading poets of his generation. In the 1970s he was associated with an independent literary movement. In 1982 he moved to Paris and since then has been dividing his time between the French capital and Kraków. He teaches 'creative writing' at the University of Houston. Adam Zagajewski's collections of poems, essays and prose have been translated into many languages, predominantly German, French and English. His book publications in English include: "Tremor: Selected Poems", "Mysticism for Beginners", "Three Angels", "Solidarity", "Solitude: Essays", "Canvas" and "Another Beauty".

Electronic Journal: Significant Events in U.S. Foreign Relations (1900 - 2001)

Focusing on a number of seminal world events, this issue of e-Journal USA: Foreign Policy Agenda offers a framework for examining how U.S. foreign relations have evolved over the past century, influenced by the legacy of America's founding ideals of protecting individual rights and freedom.

The Editors recognize that any selection of "major events" will ultimately be arbitrary, but it is our hope that those in this journal will provide insight into the American character and stimulate dialogue among international audiences.
