The Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago and the International Cultural Center in Krakow with financial support of the US mission to Poland, the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the City of Cracow have organized an exhibition of American portrait painting entitled Faces of America. The exhibition, which features portrait painting from the late 18th to mid 20th century, includes the first presentation of early American painting in Poland. Portraits of women, statesmen, children together with self-portraits of artists offer a unique opportunity to examine the evolution of American portrait painting and its role in creating national identity. Canvases of William Meritt Chase, Frederick Frieseke, Richard Emil Miller, Frederick MacMonnies, Mary Cassatt and James Abbott McNeill Whistler comprise the exhibition. The exhibition can be seen from February 16 to May 7, 2006 in the Gallery of the International Cultural Center in Krakow,

The Soldiers of Swing, under the direction of Sergeant First Class William King, carry on the jazz legacy pioneered by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and other legends of the Big Band Era. Also included in their repertoire are vocal standards and the more contemporary sounds of Maynard Ferguson and Pat Methany. In February the US Army Europe Band and Chorus will perform in Poland:

John Neal Axelrod will conduct the Sinfonietta Cracovia at a concert on February 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Philharmonic Hall in Krakow (Zwierzyniecka 1). The concert is entitled "John Williams and the Legends of Hollywood". John Neal Axelrod is an American conductor and composer. Born in Houston, Texas, he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Music at Harvard in 1988. He is Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Luzerner Sinfonie Orchester and Theater, Principal Guest Conductor of the Sinfonietta Cracovia in Krakow, founder and Conductor Laureate of Orchestra X in Houston. Democracy Dialogues is a new State Department initiative to promote discussion between Americans and people in other countries about political, economic and social issues related to democracy in the 21st century. Managed by the Bureau of the International Information Programs, Democracy Dialogues offers web-based resources and interactive discussion fora, as well as traveling and electronic speakers, including high-profile public and media figures, for post programming. The initiative's goals are to draw together diverse program resources to stimulate direct, interactive conversations with worldwide web audiences, and to identify and gather resources to enable posts to stimulate similar conversations with select in-country audiences.
