As the year draws to a close, we are happy to bring you the latest edition of Spotlight. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who partnered with us or came to one of our events over the last year. I can state with satisfaction that this year was a very productive year in American-Polish relations. In December, we will again have many excellent opportunities to highlight our friendship and we hope to see you at one of the events below.

The U.S. Consulate General in Krakow Celebrates the Human Rights Day 

Let’s get together at the Cichy Kacik tram stop!

On Friday, December 9 at 12:00 on the Tolerance Tram at the Cichy Kacik tram stop, the US Consulate General in Krakow will kick off our activities in celebration of Human Rights Day. This year, in addition to the US Consulate and On Off Theatre, several other organizations will participate in the event, including Polish Humanitarian Action, Academy of Young Diplomats, Center of International and Human Rights Law, other consulates, schools and media. There will be many events held on board the Tolerance Tram, including a photo exhibition "The Arab Spring and Polish November"; a performance entitled "When I Listen To What You Are Saying I Hear Who You Are" inspired by poetry of Ralph Waldo Emerson; a video projection with the messages from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Nobel Peace Prize winner Twakkul Karman of Yemen; a concert of electronic and experimental music, and a press conference. If you can’t catch the tram at Cichy Kacik, please join us at any other stop between Cichy Kacik and the Old City while we circle around the Planty until 14:00.

Arab Spring Conference

On December 10, Vice Consul Nadia Ziyadeh will attend the opening of a conference entitled ‘Arab Spring’. The conference is organized by the European Academy of Diplomacy in Warsaw and the Association of Law Libraries at the Jagiellonian University, section of public international law and human rights. The conference will be held in the hall of the Collegium Novum at Jagiellonian University starting at 14:00. There will be a varied selection of panelists, each offering a unique perspective on the Arab spring. All who are interested in ongoing changes in the Middle East are invited to attend.

“The Dream of an Artist” Performance in Memory of Helena Modrzejewska

The U.S. Consulate General and the ON OFF Theatre invite you to a performance entitled, “The Dream of an Artist”, a performance in memory of Helena Modrzejewska. The event will be held on December 11 at 19:00 in the Center of Contemporary Art “Solvay” in Zakopianska 62. This performance will be preceded by an evening in the “Madame” Salon in Sienna 5 on December 10 also at 19:00.

Consul General Allen Greenberg Will Open Partnership for Democracy Program for Euro 2012 

The U.S. Consulate in Krakow, working with Partnership for Democracy Foundation and other Polish and Ukrainian partners, will host a two-day long workshop for journalists from both countries from December 12 to 13 at the Law and Administration University in Rzeszow, Cegielniana 14. Consul General Allen Greenberg and University Rector Jerzy Posluszny will open the discussions which will focus on preparations for the games and plans to ensure the security of players and soccer fans. The program includes lectures and debates, with the participation of government officials and representatives from several institutions responsible for security in Poland and Ukraine.

Letters to Afghanistan with Christmas Greetings

The U.S. Consulate General, together with schools from Krakow and other cities in the south of Poland, is participating in a letter-writing campaign in coordination with the 8th Air Base at Krakow-Balice. Letters and postcards will be sent to Polish and American soldiers in Afghanistan. Delegations from schools and Consulate staff will deliver the letters to the military during a ceremony at the Balice airport planned for the week before Christmas. Letters can also be brought to the US Consulate General in Stolarska 9 until December 15, 2011.

The U.S. Consul General Will Pass United States Declaration of Independence to the Oświęcim Public Library 

On Thursday, December 15 at 11:00, Consul General Allen Greenberg will present a framed copy of Declaration of Independence to the Oświęcim Library Gallery of Books. This most important of all American documents will be the first in the collection of human rights documents to be held at the library. Co-organized with the Oswiecim Public Library and the International Youth Meeting Center in Oświecim to celebrate the International Human Rights Day, the program of events includes a concert performed by music school students, presentations, and lectures on the human rights issues we face today.
