The European Union - the US, a New Partnership? On December 2-3, 2005, the Krakow Institute of Strategic Studies, Friedrich Naumann Stiftung and the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow organized an international conference on "The European Union - the US, a New Partnership?" The conference program included a digital video conference with representatives of the U.S. Department of State: Karen B. Stewart, Director in the Office of Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus Affairs; Janet Garvey, Director in the Office of North Central European Affairs; and Damian Leader, Deputy Director in the Office of Russian Affairs. Speakers at the conference included Professor Steven Rosefielde, a Professor of Economics at the University of North Carolina with a Ph.D. from Harvard; Kenneth Fairfax, the U.S. Consul General in Krakow; and Kenneth Hillas, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw. |

Local Government Reform Discussed with Ukrainian Chiefs On December 9, 2005 the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow is organizing a session with 20 chiefs of Eastern Ukrainian regions. Local government reform will be the topic of discussion. |

American Democracy in 21st Century On December 9-11, 2005, the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora at the Jagiellonian University, with the support of the U.S. Consulate General, is organizing a conference on "American Democracy in 21st Century." In six panels the participants will discuss: |

On December 15, 2005, the U.S. Consulate General is organizing (by invitation only) showing of a documentary entitled "Christo and Jean-Claude" followed by a digital video conference with the director Albert Maysles. This will be the second in a series focusing on recently released American documentaries and feature conversations with either the director or others involved in their making. Albert Maysles along with his late brother David has been one the U.S. premiere documentary film makers through such films as "Gimme Shelter" and "Grey Gardens". This event will give film studies and contemporary art students a unique opportunity to ask him about his work in particular his long-term interest and documentation of the creations of world renowned avant-guard artists Christo and Jean-Claude. |

On December 15-16, 2005, the Partnership for Democracy program, supported by a grant from the U.S. Consulate General in Krakow, will organize another in a series of workshops for Ukrainian journalists. This time the meeting will focus on Polish educational reform. |
