The Fulbright Program

Polish-U.S. Fulbright Comission

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946, at the end of World War II, to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries, through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.

The Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by several private institutions such as the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) or Institute of International Education under a cooperative agreement with the Bureau.

Overseas, it is administered by binational Fulbright Commissions or by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassies. The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board is responsible for the final selection of all grantees and the supervision of the Program worldwide.

The Fulbright Program encompasses a variety of exchange programs, including those for faculty and professionals. The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad to 140 countries each year.

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for educational activities such as: university lecturing advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools.

Since the program's inception, more than 250,000 participants have had the opportunity to gain expertise in each other's political, economic and cultural issues.
