Anniversary of the Proliferation Security Initiative celebrated in Krakow

Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, John R. Bolton, visited Krakow on May 31 - June 1 on the occasion of a conference marking the anniversary of President Bush's Proliferation Security Initiative. During the conference President Bush, in a videotaped message, urged the more than 60 countries backing the initiative to remain vigilant.

Launched during a visit by President Bush to Krakow in May 2003, the Initiative calls on countries to work together to intercept components of weapons of mass destruction. The anniversary meeting in Krakow highlights the success of PSI in building a global network of countries willing to cooperate to prevent rogue states and non-state actors from acquiring WMD - interdicting shipments at sea, in the air, and on land. PSI has already achieved notable successes and plays a central role in global efforts to counter WMD proliferation.

Addressing the conference, Undersecretary John Bolton urged nations worldwide to scrutinize shipments to and from North Korea, Iran and Syria — nations he described as "serious proliferation threats." During the conference Russia announced it would join the Initiative.
