Mars: Mission Possible Photographs Exhibit

The exhibit "Mars: Mission Possible" presents photos from NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission that were taken by Spirit and Opportunity from January - April, 2004. It is a creation of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate-General in Krakow. The Mars Exploration Rover Project is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA., for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Washington, D.C.

The exhibit is open at the Nordic House, ul. sw. Anny 5 in Krakow, on May 11-15 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a part of the Jagiellonian University Science Fair. The guest of the exhibit is Maciej Hermanowicz, a high school student from Olsztyn, winner of the Red Rover Goes to Mars international competition, who spent 2 weeks at JPL this January.

On June 10 and July 7, 2003, NASA launched two rockets carrying Mars rovers named Spirit and Opportunity. Each rover carries a sophisticated set of instruments to search for evidence of signs of water either in the past or the present at selected sites.

The two rovers are identical, but landed at different regions of Mars. Spirit touched down at Gusev Crater, a possible former lake in a giant impact crater, on January 3, 2004, while Opportunity landed on January 24 on the Meridiani Planum, where mineral deposits suggest Mars had a wet past.
