The U.S. Ambassador to Poland, the Polish Ambassador to Ukraine, Consuls General of Ukraine and the United States in Krakow, former Polish Prime Minister and Minister of Defense among other distinguished guests gathered on December 12, 2003 in Krakow's Villa Decius to discuss how Poland and the U.S. may help Ukraine in its democratic transformation and efforts to achieve its European and transatlantic goals.
Organized within the framework of the Bridges to the East program promoting international dialog and cooperation, the conference aimed at summing up the achievements of the Institute and recommending its future activities.
The United States Ambassador to Poland, Christopher R. Hill emphasized that Poland's Eastern border cannot become the border of Europe. According to the Ambassador, that border should unite and not divide. The process leading to Europe's unity is not finished yet and Poland can play an important role in helping its Eastern neighbours join the European Union.
Jan Pieklo, the director of the Bridges to the East Institute, announced the Institute's intention to support, in co-operation with Ukraine, the democratic movement in Belorus.
The conference was accompanied by a screening of a documentary on the Lemko minority in Poland, an exhibition of photographs on the same topic and a concert of traditional Lemko songs.
