November |

Greetings from Warsaw!
November in Poland begins on a
serious and moving note: All Saints Day.
It is impressive to witness the solemn tradition of the
Polish people as they gather as families to visit
cemeteries and place candles and flowers on the graves
of their loved-ones. It reminds me of our American
holiday of Thanksgiving, later this month, when families
also come close together. |

Ambassador Victor Ashe |
|
November will be busy. I join our Polish friends in
looking forward to the arrival of the first Polish F-16
fighter jets in Poland on November 9 at the Krzesiny
Airbase near Poznan. I will join Polish President Lech
Kaczynski, Defense Minister Radek Sikorski and other high-ranking Polish government
officials in celebrating this great milestone. These new
fighter jets will be among the most advanced in all of
Europe and will greatly enhance Poland’s security. I encourage you
to read about this and other areas of U.S.-Polish
defense cooperation in the report "U.S. Security
Assistance to Poland Remains Strong" located below.
We also look forward to hosting national security expert
Peter Brookes of the Heritage Foundation and
well-known American writers Amy Tan and Jeffery Deaver.
Faculty from the State University
of New York will visit to mark the 30 year anniversary of their
partnership with the University of Warsaw's American
Studies Center. Polish Minister of Defense Sikorski travels to Washington to
meet with U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on
November 3. We
will also follow the upcoming local government
elections here in Poland.
October was an active month at the Embassy. U.S. Generals Abizaid and Casey
visited for a
conference on Iraq and former New York City Mayor Rudolph
Giuliani was here for a private speaking engagement and a meeting
with the Prime Minister. We also hosted visits from the Chairman of the Council on
Environmental Quality - President Bush’s top advisor on
environmental policy, James L. Connaughton; the U.S.
Special Envoy for Anti-Semitism, Dr. Gregg Rickman; and
a U.S. expert on counterterrorism from the Center for
Strategic and International Studies, Thomas Sanderson.
All held productive discussions with their Polish
counterparts. I continued my travels around Poland
visiting Malopolskie, Lubuskie, Dolno Slaskie, and
Pomorskie provinces. Joan and I held receptions at the
residence in honor of Polish youth who recently
participated in a U.S. Embassy funded anti-corruption
education project and the winners of a joint U.S.
Embassy-Wprost Magazine essay contest for Poland’s young
journalists. Additionally, the U.S. Department of
Justice acted on Poland’s extradition request for Edward
Mazur who is wanted in Poland on charges related to his
alleged involvement in the 1998 murder of former Police
Chief Marek Papala. Mazur is currently being held by
U.S. authorities awaiting extradition proceedings which
could be lengthy.
For Americans, this month concludes with a holiday that
is equally important, symbolically and for families:
Thanksgiving. I wish you and your family a pleasant
November holiday as we pause and consider all the things
for which we are
grateful.
Sincerely yours,
Victor Ashe |

U.S. Security Assistance to Poland Remains Strong |
For over a decade, Poland has remained a
vital, strategic partner of the U.S. Our Armed Forces have
cooperated to enhance security and economic prosperity in Europe,
the Middle East and Central Asia. As a key ally, Poland has received
substantive assistance through the Foreign Military Financing (FMF),
International Military Education and Training (IMET), Excess Defense
Article (EDA), Counter-Terrorism Fellowship (CTFP), and Joint
Contact Team Programs (JCTP). These programs, which are executed by
the Office of Defense Cooperation in the U.S. Embassy, have
supported the Polish Armed Forces in transforming, progressing
toward greater NATO interoperability, and further developing
expeditionary capabilities.
