In like a lion...

Ambassador
Victor Ashe |
And hopefully out like a lamb…welcome to our March
edition of E-news! It was a busy February for me and the
Embassy as I
traveled extensively within and out of Poland. March
doesn’t look like it will slow down any as I lead a
business outreach mission to the U.S. March 6-10,
followed by the visit of U.S. Secretary of Agriculture,
Mike Johanns, March 12-13, and then in late March I’ll
be making a trip to the Wielkopolskie region of Poland. |
|
I think that we can capitalize on the visit of Commerce
Secretary Gutierrez, our business outreach trip in
conjunction with the American Chamber of Commerce in
Poland, as well as the visit of Agriculture Secretary
Johanns to boost the trade relationship between Poland
and the U.S. The U.S. exported over a billion dollars
worth of goods to Poland last year and is the second
largest foreign investor in Poland with approximately 14
billion dollars invested since 1990 but I think we can
improve on that already strong relationship.
I want to once again extend my warm congratulations to
Cardinal Dziwisz, Archbishop of Kraków, on his nomination by the Holy Father. I
was very happy to learn about this appointment,
which-similar to the one back in 1967- is a gift for the
Church in Kraków and for the whole of Poland, and I wish
his Eminence all the best in his new capacity.
Lastly, I want to personally remark on how well I felt
President Kaczynski’s visit to Washington last month
went. I was present for the majority of his meetings and
I can testify to the genuine exchange of views that he
and President Bush had on maintaining the strong
U.S./Polish alliance and moving it forward. |

President Welcomes Polish President Lech Kaczyński to the White House |
|
President Bush hosted Polish President Lech Kaczyński at the White House on February 9, 2006. President Kaczyński is making his first visit to the White House since he assumed the Presidency of Poland on December 23, 2005. President Bush stated after the meeting that “The President of Poland comes to a country that respects Poland...it’s amazing to be sitting with somebody who knows the difference between living in a society that is not independent, and not free…and now he is the President of a free country. I thanked the President and the Polish people for their support of the democracy movement in Iraq.”

Faces of America Exhibit opens in Kraków |
|
Ambassador Victor Ashe invites the public to view an
exhibition of American portrait painting entitled “Faces
of America” at the Gallery of the International Cultural
Center on Rynek Główny 25 in Kraków. The exhibition is
organized by the Terra Foundation for American Art in
Chicago and the International Cultural Center in Kraków
with additional financial support of the U.S. mission to
Poland, the Polish Ministry of Culture and National
Heritage, and the City of Kraków. The exhibition, which
runs through May 7th, features U.S. portrait painting
from the late 18th to the mid-20th century and includes
the first presentation of early American portrait
painting in Poland. Ambassador Ashe noted that “this is
a truly brilliant collection that highlights how these
painters took European influences and fused them into a
truly unique American style.” For more information on
the exhibit and its hours please call the Gallery of the
International Cultural Center at +48 12/4242800.
