While
celebrating U.S. Independence Day
ceremonies in Krakow, Ambassador Ashe
took some time to visit Babia Gora, one
of Poland's most beautiful National
Parks. Ambassador Ashe was hosted by Dr.
Tomasz Pasierbek, Director, Touring and
Education Team; and Ranger Maciek Mazul,
Park Ranger, both from Babiogorski
National Park. The Ambassador hiked for
several hours in the Park taking in
incredible vistas of the Beskidy
Mountain area which included beautiful

American Independence Day Celebrated in Lodz |

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe and U.S. Embassy staff hosted an American Independence Day celebration at Biedermann Palace in Lodz on June 30, in celebration of 232 years of U.S. independence. More than 200 Polish leaders of public and religious life, representatives of business and educational institutions and other members of the public attended the event. U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe visited Piotrków Trybunalski to attend a ceremony in the Wolborski Forest commemorating citizens of Piotrków – both Jews and Christian Poles – murdered by Nazis during World War II. Participants in the ceremony included Israeli Ambassador David Peleg, Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, Helena Kaczmarek (representing the Voivode in Piotrkόw), Voivode Jolanta Chelminska, and Piotrków Mayor Krzysztof Chojniak. Polish Jazz legend Michal Urbaniak and guests treated an enthusiastic crowd to a spectacular concert June 22 in Warsaw’s Sowinski Park to close out the URBANATOR DAYS weekend. The U.S. Embassy sponsored Professor Bob Friedhoffer from the City University of New York, to perform at the Science Picnic held in Warsaw on June 14, 2008. During his four performances at the Science Picnic, several thousand people saw Friedhoffer perform on stage. Robert Friedhoffer performed throughout the world his “Scientific Magic Show” which gives audience members a chance to learn how magic works through a university developed program, consisting of laboratory demonstrations and experiments presented as magic tricks. | Students of the Washington, DC public school Anne Beers are in Poland to perform the play "Polish Dream - An Imaginary Trip to Poland" for Poland's first lady, Maria Kaczynska and spouses of various countries' ambassadors to Poland at Belvedere Palace on June 16. Hanna Bandarewska, a Polish actress who lives in the United States, coached the students for the performance. The 16 students will be in Poland for almost two weeks, during which time they will visit Warsaw, Toruń, Mazury, Kraków, Wieliczkę, Karpacz i Świdnice. [more] |

| Labor Elaine Chao visited Warsaw on June 10 and met with Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak and Labor Minister Jolanta Fedek. She participated in an industry round table discussion and lunch with the American Chamber of Commerce to discuss the state of the U.S. economy and America’s competitive workforce. United States Returns $ 16.5 Million from Civil Forfeiture Action to Fraud Victims in Poland |
| U.S. Ambassador Victor Ashe announced June 5 that nearly 16.5 million dollars has been remitted to a court-appointed receiver in Poland to be distributed to the victims of a scheme that defrauded Polish investors. The money was obtained through a civil forfeiture action filed by the United States Government in Manhattan federal court to recover the proceeds of the scheme. This case marks the first time the United States Government has returned fraud proceeds to victims in Poland. [more] |

| On June 4, 2008, Ambassador Victor Ashe presided over the official opening of the new office space for the Federal Benefits unit in the United States Embassy in Warsaw. This newly expanded office within the Consular section has 6 full-time staff dedicated to serving Social Security and other federal benefits recipients in Poland and surrounding countries. The Federal Benefits unit is also the key United States Embassy office responsible for implementing the U.S./Poland Social Security Totalization agreement which was signed in April, 2008, by Ambassador Ashe and Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Jolanta Fedak. | In the early months of 1989, as a result of the Round Table talks, an agreement was signed calling for partially free elections to the Parliament. The opposition was to have 35% of the seats in Sejm, and an entirely free election to Senate. The election held on 4 June 1989 brought a landslide victory to Solidarity. On her first trip to southern Poland, Deputy Chief of Mission Pam Quanrud was welcomed by Father Andrzej Surowiec to the Annual Children’s Fair in Helusz in the Podkarpackie region. This year the theme of the Children’s Fair was the United States. Ms. Quanrud attended a Mass led by Archbishop Jozef Michalik and gave the opening remarks to the day’s celebration before an audience of nearly two thousand on the beautifully renovated fairgrounds of the camp, surrounded by a host of towering chestnuts and evergreens.
