Volume II  Issue 7

From the Ambassador

 Ambassador Victor Ashe
Ambassador Victor Ashe

Greetings from Warsaw!

We recently celebrated America’s 231st birthday with four events across Poland – in Gdynia on June 28, in Wroclaw on July 2, in Krakow on July 3, and in Warsaw on July 4.  America's support of liberty and freedom rings true in Poland where these shared values are important.  I am glad we were able to hold celebrations in four different cities and that so many of our Polish friends were able to join us. Please view our photo gallery.

June was a busy month with visits by President and Mrs. Bush, the Commandant of the United States Marine Corps General Conway, a Presidential Delegation to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Patrick Quinn, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Rupert Murdoch, and artist Macy Gray – to name a few.  Legendary Polish film director Andrzej Wajda received the U.S. Embassy’s first Czesław Miłosz Award for Contributions to U.S-Polish Understanding.  In cooperation with the Tennessee Holocaust Commission, the “Living On” photographic exhibition featuring Holocaust survivors who live in Tennessee opened at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The second round of missile defense negotiations recently occurred in Washington.  An international conference on missile defense was recently held in Krakow sponsored by the U.S. Consulate General and the Polish Institute of Strategic Studies.

July is already another active month with Polish President Lech Kaczynski traveling to Washington on July 16 to meet with President Bush and join him for lunch afterwards. This will be President Kaczynski’s second visit to the White House, and his third meeting with President Bush, since becoming President less than two years ago.

Joan and I wish you and yours an enjoyable summer.

Sincerely yours,
Victor Ashe
