Happy New Year!

December was a very active month for the U.S. Embassy in Poland. On December 3, I had the great honor to present the second annual Karski Freedom Award to Tadeusz Mazowiecki for his lifelong work promoting democracy and human rights in Poland. His work has spanned many years, during the late communist period, through the imposition of martial law in 1981, and during the transition to democracy in 1989.

Collaboration with the new Polish government began in earnest in December. I had meetings with the new Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Defense, Labor, Agriculture, Culture, Sport, and Higher Education and Science. I look forward to working with the new government on a host of wide-ranging issues to promote the close U.S.-Polish bilateral relationship.

Mid-month, we hosted an important digital video conference on combating violence against women. It was very well received; we hope to do something similar again this coming year. To mark the one year anniversary of the Young Learners Resource Center in Warsaw, we held the “Treasures of the Earth” contest at the Embassy, where youngsters from the Center performed skits, sang and danced for prizes.

On December 10, we implemented the new 10-fingerprint system in our visa section, which will greatly enhance the efficiency of the visa process and improve security.

We look forward to beginning 2008 with renewed talks on placing a missile defense interceptor site in Poland, and to signing a new Fulbright Agreement which will expand this important exchange, now 49 years old, between our two countries. I will attend the annual U.S. Ambassador to European Nations conference in Washington, DC in early January, and will return to Poland in time to attend President Kaczynski’s New Year’s reception mid-month.

On January 15, Minister of Defense Bogdan Klich will meet for the first time with Defense Secretary Robert Gates. We continue to appreciate the contribution and sacrifice of Polish troops and diplomats in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also in January, we will commemorate the 90th anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson’s 14 Points speech, which urged the restoration of Poland as a free and independent nation, following World War I, 125 years after it was erased from the maps of Europe.

Reporting on our work at the Embassy is updated daily on our website, which you can visit at www.poland.usembassy.gov.

I wish you and your family a very happy New Year. I always enjoy receiving your comments and thoughts on this newsletter, and am committed to responding to them personally if you send me a message at AsheVH@state.gov.

Sincerely Yours,

Victor Ashe
