What is Public Diplomacy: Public Diplomacy seeks to promote the
national interest of the United States through understanding,
informing and influencing foreign audiences
The USIA Alumni Association and the Public Diplomacy Council
are supported by men and women who spent their careers as public
diplomats for the U.S. Government or in support of U.S. public
diplomacy efforts, and other interested Americans and
organizations. Both are volunteer, non-profit organizations.
The IIP provides United States Government official texts, policy statements
and interpretive material, features, and byline articles prepared daily by the
U.S. Department of State, International Information Programs.
The Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and
Public Affairs, Charlotte Beers, helps ensure that public
diplomacy (engaging, informing, and influencing key
international audiences) is practiced in harmony with public
affairs (outreach to Americans) and traditional diplomacy to
advance U.S. interests and security and to provide the moral
basis for U.S. leadership in the world.
The Department of State uses diplomacy to promote
and protect American interests. It maintains nearly 260
diplomatic and consular posts around the world, including
embassies, consulates, and missions to international
organizations.
