Elections and the
Electoral Process |
 |
| |
Federal elections are held in November of even-numbered
years. Just as the President, Senators, and Representatives
have overlapping constituencies, their terms also overlap.
- All Representatives are elected
every two years by the voters of the district they
represent.
- Senators serve six-year terms,
with one-third of them up for election every even year.
Senators are chosen in statewide elections and represent all
residents of their states.
- The President and Vice
President are elected together every four years in a
nationwide election.

January 2008 U.S. SOCIETY & VALUES
George Orwell's classic 1946 essay, "Politics and the English
Language," attacked murky writing, such as dying metaphors,
pretentious diction, meaningless words, and proposed that clear
writing can lead to clear thinking and a better world. Principally,
he went after fuzzy academics, though he included a sample of
communist propaganda among his targets. After that, Orwell began
work on his great book, 1984, which introduced the reader to the
concept of Newspeak, the fictional but terrifying system of language
designed to hobble and crush independent thought.

ABSTRACT
Mass Transit Boom
By Thomas J. Billitteri
Pressed by rising gas prices, highway gridlock and global-warming
concerns, cities are spending unprecedented amounts on public
transit systems — from streetcars and other "light-rail" lines to
commuter trains and rapid-transit buses. They also are experimenting
with "congestion-pricing" plans that impose tolls on motorists to
induce them to use transit or alter driving habits. While traffic. .
